Join our Board of Directors

The Board of Directors is responsible for managing CCOC honestly, in good faith, and in the best interest of the organization.

The importance of volunteers

As a Board member you would support CCOC staff and offer expertise and advice in decision making. We would not be able to run as successfully as we do without the help of our incredible volunteers! As a community-based non-profit organization, we rely on our Board of Directors to help us navigate decision-making and act in the best interest of the organization. Our main goal is to create, maintain and promote affordable housing for those in need within the Ottawa area.

Each year, we hold an Annual General Meeting (AGM) in May to elect new members to our Board of Directors. We are looking for folks who would are interested in learning more about affordable housing and CCOC’s mission and values, gain experience in the non-profit housing sector, and engage in important governance related issues.

Diversity within the Board

We will be electing new members at our AGM on May 18th, 2023. We encourage candidates from all backgrounds and communities to join, especially those from under-represented communities, such as Black, Indigenous, People of Colour (BIPOC), people with disabilities, youth, seniors, those on social assistance or subsidies, those new to Canada, and those from the LGBTQIA2S+ community.

At CCOC, while we commit to anti-oppression, equity work and Indigenous reconciliation, we also recognize that our current Board does not fully reflect the diversity of backgrounds, identities, and life experiences among our tenants and community. You can read our anti-oppression statement here.

Role details

Our Board meetings are currently hybrid with the option to attend in person at the CCOC office (415 Gilmour Street, suite 200, Ottawa ON). Meetings are held once a month at the end of the month, usually from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Occasionally, there may be other commitments that require time throughout the month. There will be Board packages sent out to members prior to each meeting to review and prepare beforehand. We are happy to cover family care and/or transportation costs for Board members.

    Time commitment and responsibilities

Board member terms last 2 years and members can be re-elected for 3 terms within 10 consecutive years. This role will help you gain experience in the non-profit housing sector and you will be able to build relationships with people in the community. Responsibilities include attending to legal affairs, overseeing financial management/budget, ensuring adequate human resources, hiring and reviewing performance of the Executive Director, overseeing the work of all CCOC committees, and much more. Not to worry, professional experience in management, administration, law, accounting, or housing is not required.
