CCOC is located on the traditional, unsurrendered and unceded Algonquin territory of the Anishinaabe people, and we acknowledge the widespread systems of oppression in our society and the inequitable impacts of those systems. We also recognize the communities we house who are disproportionately impacted by generations of racial and social inequity, including Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour (BIPOC), LGBTQ2S+ individuals, persons with disabilities, people living in poverty, people with addictions and mental health challenges, and others who experience discrimination because of who they are.
Access to inclusive and affordable housing designed and built for diverse communities with residents from a variety of backgrounds and incomes is essential to create a more equitable society.
CCOC values and prioritizes diversity, equity, and inclusion and strives to embed these principles in everything we do. From the services we provide to tenants, to hiring and employment practices, to membership, to the Board Directors and volunteers, CCOC works to ensure we are aligned with our mission and values. We are committed to a diverse and inclusive organizational culture where tenants, employees, volunteers, and members are treated with dignity, respect, and independence. We recognize that creating an organization fully reflecting the rich diversity of backgrounds, identities, and life experiences among CCOC employees and tenants is an ongoing process, and we are committed to identifying, preventing, and removing barriers to participation in our services, programs, and opportunities.
For several years, CCOC has been working on initiatives linked to diversity, accessibility, and inclusion, including anti-oppression, anti-racist organizational change, and tenant engagement projects. These initiatives have informed a review of organizational policies, processes, and practices, and a review of our governance structure. We have made progress, but there is still a lot of work to do.
We will continue to learn and develop a better understanding of the inequities disproportionately impacting certain people and groups in our community. We are working to eliminate insensitivity, marginalization, and oppression in our practices, behaviours, and choices. As an organization, we are committed to actively working to remove the structural and cultural barriers to meaningful, inclusive, and accessible participation in the operation, visioning, and decision making of CCOC.
